Chapter 12

Poe tapped the dry-erase marker against her chin and admired her handiwork. On a giant whiteboard in her living room, she’d drawn a very rough map of Kensleigh Landing East. On one side of the map, she’d listed the names of three women and the locations in which their bodies had been found. On the other side of the map, she had three more names—GamerGeek, Theo Greene, and Random Murderer. She nodded her head in approval of her project.

A knock at the front door, which was only done out of courtesy, preceded Seneca and Oliver’s entrance. Seneca looked tired, which was to be expected. She’d worked all day at the bank and now she was working again, sort of.

“Well, you have been busy,” Seneca said, admiration in her tone. “This is very organized, Poe. I’m surprised.”

Poe gave a mock bow. “Well, I do have talents that lie beyond my ability to engage in sparkling conversation,” she said wryly.

“Is that the town?” Oliver asked, examining Poe’s neat lines and precise handwriting. “No offense, but you’re surprisingly talented at drawing.”

“Why would that offend me?”

“Well, you have a tendency to be a bit messy in other areas of your life. I just thought you’d be a messy writer and hopeless illustrator,” he replied candidly. “But that apparently is not the case.”

Poe took a deep breath and tried her best to ignore her friend’s backhanded compliment. “I ordered Chinese. There’s no wine, but I have soda and I think there might be some vodka in the freezer.”

“I’m not drinking tonight, thanks,” Seneca replied. “My poor liver needs a break.” The witches had been meeting a lot more frequently lately, and it seemed that every time they met, the booze flowed copiously. She made a mental note to have their next gathering at Mischa’s. Mischa always provided far more food and fewer alcoholic beverages since she had two impressionable children in the house.

Oliver shrugged. “I’d love a soda.”

Another knock at the door startled Poe, until she remembered the Chinese food. “I’ll get that. Oliver, you sort out the drinks for everyone. Seneca, try not to solve the murder before I get back.”

Seneca suppressed a grin and continued to examine Poe’s map.

Minutes later, the trio was deep in discussion of what they were calling the Cupid Murders.

“So, what we do know so far is the location of the bodies and the names of the victims.” Poe popped a fried wonton into her mouth and chewed thoughtfully. “They’re kind of random, but they do follow the pattern of being date places.”

“Date places?” Oliver looked confused.

“Places where the women could have been taken on dates. The first was the woods behind the park. The park downtown is a popular location for local lovers because there’s always live music or other events happening,” Seneca explained.

“And the other two were a Chinese restaurant and the parking lot of the movie theater.” Poe pointed out each location on the map. “They’re spread out, so we can assume the killer is mobile.
